TheStateofPalestineexpressesitsadamantandunequivocalrejectionoftheannouncementmadebyUSPresidentDonaldTrump.TheAmericanAdministration’srecognitionofJerusalemasthecapitalofIsraelisanactofhostilityagainstthePalestinianpeople,theirinalienablenationalrights.Further,theStateofPalestineviewsthispolicyannouncementasanassaultonthespiritandletterofinternationallaw,includingtheUnitedNationsCharter,whichdoesnotaccepttheacquisitionofterritorybyforcenortheconsequencesthatresultfromsuchillegalactions.ItisalsoanassaultonthespiritandstandingofJerusalemasacityattheheartandspiritualcenterofbillionsofpeoplearoundtheworld.

ThisannouncementhasnobearingonthelegalstandingofJerusalemasanoccupiedPalestiniancityandanintegralpartoftheoccupiedPalestinianterritory.However,thepoliticalimplicationsofthisdecisionwillstretchfarbeyondPalestineandtheregion.PresidentTrump’sannouncementrewardscolonization,graveviolationsofinternationallaw,andabjectdisregardforhumanrights.ThisAmericanpolicydecisionsendsadangerousmessagethatthreatenstheinternationalsystemandwillundoubtedlyencourageotheractorsthatdonotrespectinternationallawtocontinuedoingsobecauseinsteadofaccountability,theywillberewarded.Thisdecisionthreatenstheinternationalsystemasweknowitandassuch,itthreatenstodestabilizetheworld.

TheAmericanAdministrationhasdisqualifieditselffromtheroleofbrokerinthequestforpeaceintheregion.Palestineregretsthatwiththisposition,theTrumpAdministrationhasadoptedapositionthatclearlyattemptstopre-emptnegotiations,whichitshouldhavestarted.Instead,thisstephasderailedeffortstorestartpeacetalkswiththeaimofreachingajustandfinalsolutionfortheconflict.Inthisregard,theStateofPalestinereiteratesthatthereisnopeacewithouttheestablishmentofaPalestinianstateandaPalestinianstatecannotandwillnotbeestablishedwithoutEastJerusalemasitscapital.

Withthisannouncement,PresidentDonaldTrumpviolatestheUSletterofassurancesofandnumerousSecurityCouncilresolutionsthatdonotrecognizeIsrael’sillegaloccupationandannexationofEastJerusalem.Moredangerously,theTrumpAdministration’sillegalendorsementofIsraelicolonizationthreatenstoignitereligiousfervorandtensionsandtointroduceafalseyetincendiaryreligiousdimensiontotheconflict.ThisisespeciallydangerousandrunscounterthePalestinianposition,whichinsiststhatthisconflictisoneaboutnationalrightsandnotreligion.

TheStateofPalestineappreciatestheoverwhelmingsupportithasreceivedfromstatesworldwide,whohaveopenlyandunequivocallyopposedthisAmericanposition.Wecallonthesestatestorisetotheoccasionandtakepracticalstepstoprotectthetwo-statesolutionandtheinalienablerightsofthePalestinianpeople.Itistimeforcountriesthatopposethisdangerousdevelopmenttostandontherightsideofhistory,recognizetheStateofPalestine,inlinewithinternationallaw,andrejectattemptstoplungetheworldindisorderandchaos.

Todayisasaddayfortheinternationalsystem,internationallaw,andthePalestinianpeople.TheAmericanAdministrationhasmadeadecisiontostand,alone,onthewrongsideofhistoryandrewardthecolonizer.Itmustremainalone.

Finally,theStateofPalestinereaffirmsitssovereignrighttodefenditspeopleandnationalrightsthroughallavailablelegalandpoliticalmeans.Palestinecannotandwillnotsurrendertorealitiesdictatedbybruteforceandbelligerence.
